And she’s more of a musician that you are a painter.” When Mr. Pontellier says this to Edna, I believe she isn’t torn or hurt by it, because she has finally realized that his opinion about her life doesn’t matter. She has learned to accept that he will never completely understand her. If it were him in the same situation, he would be allowed to do whatever he wants because he is the man in the house.
Also, I think it is odd that when Edna is unhappy she seeks Mademoiselle Reisz.
